San Francisco Giants Pitcher Tim Lincecum gets 50th win despite Carlos Beltran return

Tim Lincecum notched his fourth career shutout and 50th win by limiting the New York Mets to six hits Thursday night in a 2-0 Giants triumph.

San Francisco, which won six of its final seven games before the All-Star break, benefited from the resolute pitching of the National League’s two-time reigning Cy Young Award winner, who struck out five in his first shutout since June 29, 2009, at St. Louis.

Lincecum, who received 15 runs of support in his last start July 7 at Milwaukee, survived this time with little offensive backing as Pablo Sandoval‘s two-out double scored Buster Posey in the second inning. That was the lone lapse by Mets starter R.A. Dickey (6-3), who surrendered five hits in seven innings. Posey plated a run in the eighth with a bases-loaded fielder’s choice.

Lincecum (10-4) weathered a mild threat when he stranded Alex Cora on second base as Carlos Beltran flied out to end the first inning.

The Mets mounted a more serious bid in the fifth when Jason Bay walked and Josh Thole singled to open the inning. Lincecum responded by retiring Ruben Tejada on a fly to right, which advanced Bay to third base. Dickey sacrificed Thole to second base before Lincecum escaped by coaxing Angel Pagan’s fly to right.
